Autumn At The Sweetshop Of Second Chances
by Jodie Homer

I am so excited for Autumn at the Sweetshop of Second Chances to be out. It feels like ages ago I had the idea and started writing it.
The idea funny enough came from a Christmas film I watched with my husband called The Family Man. That was the ah ha moment. That is when I realised I wanted to do a sliding door trope book. This is the first book where the trope actually came before everything else. The character Abby was there already from the previous book Falling For a Star and I knew that Abby’s story hadn’t finished so it was quite easy for me to bring Abby back and give her a story of her own.
Tom was one of the hardest character to figure out. I knew what job I wanted James and Tom to have. That was easy because the sweetshop is a real place opposite where I work. Tom I would describe as a Labrador dog because he is so loyal and friendly. I wanted Tom to immediately believe Abby so they could have a bond almost straight away and the story that follows is very natural.
I knew straight away I wanted an ambiguous ending that heavily implies that the two characters get together at the end but there’s earning of their love. The ending of this is one of my all time favourite endings. I had to think about the ending that made sense even though there’s magical realism in the book, the ending needed to make sense if readers got all the way through to the last chapter and then it was confusing then it might ruin the story but if Abby gets her life and friends back in an alternate world and knows what she wants and then fights for it at the end I am hoping that satisfies readers enough to love the entire story and believe the characters did end up together.
I feel like the sweetshop was its own character because the sweetshop in real life that I pass on the way to work every day is beautiful. It is a beautiful red colour and it did feel like it belonged to an older time. That was a lot of fun and the perfect setting for an autumn romance. My favourite scenes are the ones where Tom and Abby are working together and Abby has to relearn how to make chocolate.
I last of all want to talk about the secret history of the sweetshop that isn’t real but it is real in the book. Tom and Abby’s grandparents history was fun to write and I loved writing Mr Froff who was actually based on someone in real life when I did my work placement in year 10 at a care home. I love Tom and Abby’s history and Mr Froff having more screen time (book time).
Thank you, Jodie, for tellng us about your new book. I'm excited to read it.
